Abe Fortas was:
a member of the U.S. Supreme Court;
an unsuccessful nominee for the position of Chief Justice;
the first justice to resign from the Court under public pressure;
born in Memphis to Orthodox Jewish immigrants;
rose from humble origins to the very center of legal and political power in the US.
